Police kill three suspects in shootout in Pinetown

JOHANNESBURG – Three suspected robbers were killed and one wounded in a shootout on the M13 in Hillcrest outside Pinetown, Durban. 

The men were trying to carry out a cash-in-transit heist. 

Police spokesperson Thembeka Mbhele said the suspects held up the security guard at a petrol station in Hillcrest.

"They took away two boxes of money, one of which has been recovered before they fled in a Golf towards the direction of Durban.”

She said police were alerted and traced the vehicle.

“The suspects' vehicle overturned as police were chasing them. They (suspects) got out and started shooting at the police,” she told eNCA.com. "That is when police retaliated and three people were confirmed dead on the scene."

One suspect was badly wounded and taken to hospital under police watch. He has been arrested. 

Motorists were warned to expect delays around the area.
