JOHANNESBURG, 28 September 2016 - Lawyer Ulrich Roux is representing the so-called Uber victims,. He says they are considering their legal options.
JOHANNESBURG – The case against four men accused of raping, kidnapping and robbing Uber passengers was postponed on Monday in the Randburg Magistrate’s Court.
State prosecutor Dinesh Nandkissor told the court that one of the accused’s legal representatives had withdrawn from the case and had to be replaced with a legal aid lawyer.
“The indictment is yet to be finalised and it appears at this stage the matter will be heard at the High Court on charges of rape robbery and kidnapping. Further charges may be added,” Nandkissor said.
The accused, one of whom is a former Uber driver, have been linked to four cases where the driver’s passengers were raped, robbed, or both, in 2016.
In one incident in July, a woman was attacked and raped after getting into what she thought was an Uber taxi in Fourways and in a separate incident a couple was attacked after ordering an Uber ride home via the service’s mobile app from the Movida nightclub in Sunninghill in the early hours of the morning.
The four accused will remain in custody until their next court appearance on 23 March.
