DURBAN - The entrance to a University of KwaZulu-Natal student residence has been damaged after a fire on Monday morning.

Lt Colonel Thulani Zwane, KwaZulu-Natal police spokesman, said the William O’Brien residence building was set on fire at approximately 7.15am by about five suspects.

"We are not sure if the suspects are student protesters or not but the matter will be investigated," he said.

Reporter Dasen Thathiah is there and says that the fire is at one of the Pietermaritzburg campuses.

"The damage seems to be extensive and the roof is caving in. At this stage we are waiting to hear from police about how the fire was set," said Thathiah.
