UN asks SA to reconsider plans to withdraw from ICC

JOHANNESBURG - United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-Moon is hoping South Africa will reconsider its decision to withdraw from the International Criminal Court.

He says South Africa played a significant role in the establishment of the ICC, as one of the first signatories of the Rome Statute.

Last week the UN received a letter from South Africa announcing its decision to pull out within a year.

The UN chief hopes SA will change its mind before the withdrawal takes effect.
