JOHANNESBURG – There is uncertainty over whether universities will open on Monday because several student bodies have warned that they will shut down tertiary institutions if fees are increased.
Higher Education Minister Blade Nzimande was expected to make an announcement on possible fee increments on Friday but he postponed his briefing.
The Council of Higher Education has recommended an increase linked to inflation so students could be looking at paying about six percent more next year.
Students have boycotted the fees commission’s hearings.
The government tasked the commission with assessing the feasibility of free education, following protests last year.
