JOHANNESBURG - Female students at the Rhodes University went half-naked in protest against sexual violence at the institution.

This follows a protest on Tuesday, when the students formed a human chain on campus after earlier searching residences for alleged rapists and threatening to shut down classes.

Protesting students, who drew up a list of demands which they handed to university management, said they would shut down the campus if their demands were not met.

The rapes at the university haveresulted in students launching a campaign under the hashtag RUReferenceList.

Police were on the scene to monitor the students.

Vice-Chancellor apologises for pushing female protester

Video footage showing Rhodes University Vice-Chancellor, Dr Sizwe Mabizela, shoving a protesting female student, has emerged.

Students had barricaded the university&39;s entrance when Mabizela came to confront them.

The VC can be seen pushing a girl sitting on a rock.

According to the HeraldLive, Mabizela later apologised for his actions.

“The Vice-Chancellor has this morning in an engagement with students unreservedly apologised for his actions,” the university spokeswoman Catherine Deiner was quoted as saying by HeraldLive.
