Violence has erupted outside the University of KwaZulu-Natal in Pietermaritzburg.
PIETERMARITZBURG - Violence erupted outside the University of KwaZulu-Natal in Pietermaritzburg on Thursday morning.
Students and police clashed on the streets surrounding the campus.
Some protesters also stoned passing vehicles.
Officers responded, firing rubber bullets and tear gas.
Earlier, students set fire to furniture and refuse.
Classes resumed on Wednesday after all UKZN campuses in Durban and Pietermaritzburg were shut down recently.
There have been on-and-off protests at the university for several weeks as students demand free education and improved living conditions.
