Hundreds of police have been deployed to the volatile town of Vuwani in Limpopo which is has been marked as a hotspot in this year's municipal elections.

JOHANNESBURG - Polling stations have been opened amid heavy security in Vuwani, Limpopo on Tuesday.

Hundreds of police have been deployed to the volatile town which is has been marked as a hotspot in this year's municipal elections.

In the streets of the town, police nyalas are patrolling the area while dozens of police officers stand guard at the 14 stations that opened for special voting on Tuesday.

A military convoy was also spotted in the area while a police helicopter circled overhead.

Authorities have said just over 30 people are registered to vote on Tuesday while 40,000 others are set to cast their ballots on Wednesday.
