JOHANNESBURG - The University of Witwatersrand (Wits) says it has finalised applications for the 2018 academic year.

The university will not be accepting any further applications for the first semester intake.

The registration process at Wits has not been completed and will continue for the duration of January.

The university was adamant it would not be accepting walk-ins after President Jacob Zuma&39;s announcement of free higher education for poor and working class students in December.

Security guards were stationed at entrances to the main campus in Braamfontein, but there were no walk-in applicants.

The institution received some 56,000 applications for undergraduate studies, but enrolled just over 5,000 students.
