BOSTON - The Boston Marathon has been cancelled for the first time in its 124-year history, with organisers saying it will be replaced by a virtual event.
The marathon was supposed to get underway on 20 April, but it was postponed to 14 September.
However, It has now been called off and a virtual race will take place between 7 and 14 September.
For the virtual marathon, participants who can verify they ran 42km on their own in less than six hours will receive a medal, T-shirt, runner's bib and programme.
Those who do not want to participate will have their entry fees refunded.
