PORT ELIZABETH – Chippa United continued their impressive league form as they beat Kaizer Chiefs 1-0 in an Absa Premiership match, played at the Nelson Mandela Stadium in Port Elizabeth on Wednesday evening.
Abel Mabaso’s right-footed finish from close range in the fifth minute, from a superb cross from Mark Mayambela, was the difference between the two sides.
Chiefs could consider themselves unlucky midway through the first half when hard-working midfielder Hendrick Ekstein saw his strike rattle off the Chippa upright.
Second half substitute Gustavo Paez, on for Ekstein for the final third of the match, tried to find the Amakhosi magic of old but the Chiefs midfield were simply too well bottled up by their Chippa opponents.
The damage from a Chiefs perspective could have been more severe when Teenage Hadebe did well to clear the goal-bound shot of Katlego Mashego from the Amakhosi goalline late in the game.
The Chippa defence in front of goalkeeper Daniel Akpeyi, held firm under severe pressure, with the experienced Mark Mayambela being a major handful for the Chiefs defence.
Chiefs goalkeeper Itumeleng Khune was the busier of the gloveman on the night as Chippa had the better of the possession, while Akpeyi did well to keep a clean-sheet at the other end of the park.
Chippa, now on 19 points from 13 games, have won four and drawn two of their last six league games and will travel to the Mother City to play Ajax Cape Town on Saturday.
Chiefs, with three draws and two losses in their last five league matches, remain on 16 points now for 13 games and will face Platinum Stars in Rustenburg on Saturday.
