JOHANNESBURG – Former Kaizer Chiefs captain Tefu Mashamaite is training with Major League Soccer (MLS) side New York City FC.
The reigning PSL Footballer of the Season is a free agent after contract negotiations with Chiefs turned sour with his now much publicised exit from the club.
Mashamaite, who captained Chiefs to a league and cup double last season trained with the MLS side on Wednesday in the hope of landing a contract.
American reports suggest that the 30-year-old defender is on a 10 day trial with the newly formed club.
Mashamaite played all 30 league games for Chiefs last season and remarkably picked up just two cautions, a rare feat for a defender.
He was a major winner at the 2015 PSL Awards where he walked away with multiple gongs.
He was joined in training on Wednesday by Chelsea legend Frank Lampard at the club’s training base SUNY Purchase.
Lampard officially began his tenure with the club after a loan spell at NYFC’s sister club Manchester City.
The club has another notable international star on its roaster, David Villa, a World Cup winner with Spain and a UEFA Champions League winner with Barcelona.
There are rumours that Italian midfielder Andrea Pirlo could join the side in the next coming days.
Juventus and MLS have completed the paperwork regarding the transfer of Andrea Pirlo. He is now a NYCFC player. [via @DiMarzio]— NYCFCWatch (@NYCFCWatch) July 1, 2015
