JOHANNESBURG - Bafana Bafana captain and Orlando Pirates goalkeeper Senzo Meyiwa was well and truly on the road to becoming a South African sporting superstar before his tragic death on October 26.

Meyiwa (27) was shot dead in Vosloorus on Sunday just before midnight.

The Durban-born goalie made his big break into the Premier Soccer League when he was picked up by Soweto giant Orlando Pirates in 2005.

Since then, Meyiwa blossomed into one of the country’s finest goalkeepers and became an integral leading figure between the sticks for both club and country.

Meyiwa was awarded the captaincy of Bafana Bafana during the recent rounds of Afcon qualifiers and lead the team with a cool head, coupled with stellar performances without conceding a single goal.
