Two die at Ironman Championship

JOHANNESBURG - Port Elizabeth police have confirmed two competitors who took part in the 2019 Standard Bank Ironman African Championship have died.

It happened during the swimming leg of the race on Sunday.

In a statement, Ironman sent its condolences to the family and friends of both athletes.

The two competitors experienced difficulties during the swimming leg of the Ironman Championships and needed urgent medical attention.

Leon Stanvliet from George and Andre Trichardt from Durban were rushed to hospital where they died.

Its believed one of the men may have suffered a heart attack and another from what appeared to be convulsions.

In a statement, Ironman says it is working with local authorities to gather more details and will continue to do everything possible to provide a safe environment for athletes.

Police have opened inquest dockets.
