Wayde van Niekerk is back. The Olympic Champion made his 2020 debut in the 400m at the Free State Provincial Championships this weekend.

BLOEMFONTEIN - Wayde van Niekerk is back. 

The Olympic Champion made his 2020 debut in the 400m at the Free State Provincial Championships this weekend. 

The world record holder is returning to the track after a devastating knee injury threatened to derail his career in 2017.

Despite running a slower time than his normal, Van Niekerk is sounding a warning that he is looking to get back to his best.

“It’s been two years out of the game. Every time I get the opportunity to run, I’m gonna use it and do a good job," he said.

Van Niekerk’s certainty is also boosted by his medical team’s belief that setbacks from the knee injury are a thing of the past.

He has boldly stated that he is back and will be racing this season and that he is focused on Tokyo 2020.
