JOHANNESBURG - Planet versus Plastic! That's the theme for this year's Earth Day which is being observed today.

According to an Ispos survey, 85% of people worldwide, including respondents from South Africa, agree to the soon-to-be ban on single use plastic, as plastics constitute 70% of ocean pollution.

These findings come just ahead of the fourth round of the plastic pollution treaty negotiations, set to take place in Canada this week.

South African participants in the survey expressed strong support for implementing specific bans and holding governments and plastic producers accountable.

The WWF has also been calling on governments to support global bans and phase out single-use plastic products. WWF South Africa's, Lorren De Kock.
