Education Minister visits school following four suicides

JOHANNESBURG - Basic Education Minister Angie Motshekga is visiting the Eqinisweni Secondary School in Ivory Park.

Four pupils allegedly committed suicide there in separate incidents over 10 days.

All four pupils had allegedly drank poison before their deaths.

The first incident took place on 26 April when a Grade 10 girl drank poison at home.

On 2 May, a Grade 11 girl was found dead at home.

The next day, a Grade 11 boy died in hospital where he was being treated after drinking poison.

The last girl, a Grade 12 pupil, died on Sunday while being rushed to a local clinic.

Gauteng Education has since dispatched a psycho-social support unit to the school to provide counselling. 

MEC Matome Chiloane is expected to join Minister Motshekga at the school.
