JOHANNESBURG - Gauteng police have arrested 15 suspects in connection with public violence during service delivery protests in Ratanda.
No arrests have yet been made for the torching of Lesedi Municipality Mayor Mluleki Nkosi's house.
Residents took to the streets after nearly a month without water.
Gauteng Premier Panyaza Lesufi said supply has been partially restored to the area.
Meanwhile, Gauteng Finance MEC Nkululeko Dunga has condemned violence against political leaders.
He made the statement following the torching of Nkosi’s house.
Dunga said that while he acknowledged the residents' frustration, violence is not an acceptable response.
“We must also speak plainly about Lesedi. The frustration of the people of Lesedi with the state of governance in their municipality is real and we do not dismiss them.
“What we cannot and will not condone is the burning of the Mayor's House. We condemn that act without reservation.
“Anger at governance failures must find its expression through accountability, through the ballot, through organized community voice, never through arson, never through violence against any person,” he said.
