80 confirmed deaths in Zimbabwe’s ferry accident

JOHANNESBURG - The death toll from the boat accident on Zimbabwe's Lake Kariba has risen to 80.

An overloaded passenger ferry overturned in choppy waters on Tuesday on the vast lake on the border with Zambia.

Most of the passengers on the vessel were local villagers and fish traders.

Officials said the boat was authorised to carry 90 people but was packed with over 120 people.

Hundreds of people gathered at the district hospital in the lakeside town of Kariba to identify the bodies of their relatives and loved ones.

Survivors said they pleaded with the crew to turn back as the vessel had begun taking on water soon after departing.
