Legal analyst unpacks Tshwane council drama

PRETORIA - Former Tshwane mayor Murunwa Makwarela could now face fraud charges after submitting an insolvency rehabilitation certificate which was found to be fake.

The drama surrounding the mayoral chain in Tshwane has definitely taken another turn.

So, what are the legal implications?   

"It is a very serious offence, especially because the reports have said to members of the public, beware there are individuals that are falsifying court orders that have dire and very serious implications," legal analyst Mpumelelo Zikalala said.

"From a legal point of view, we have three offences that can take place. Firstly, fraud. Secondly, perjury and the third is forgery which incurs a very heavy sentence when it comes to the perpetrators and then there are also civil proceedings."
