JOHANNESBURG - Gauteng's pork industry is counting the cost of African Swine Fever.
Outbreaks in Tshwane since November 2025 are reported to have cost losses of more than R10million.
According to reports, more than 69,000 pigs have been affected by the outbreaks, with around 60,000 animals culled to contain the disease.
The South African Pork Producers' Organisation has already spent an estimated R10million on culling, carcass disposal and labour, excluding direct losses suffered by farmers.
The DA said the outbreaks have dealt a major blow to farmers, farm workers, food security and Gauteng's meat industry.
While African Swine Fever poses no risk to humans, it can have devastating economic consequences for the pig farming industry.
