JOHANNESBURG - Government has announced South Africa is prepared for any outcome as it awaits a US decision on its eligibility for AGOA trade benefits in 2027.
Trade, Industry and Competition Minister Parks Tau said engagements with Washington DC aimed at stabilising trade and investment relations will continue.
He said new markets have also opened for South African exports.
"If the United States' concerns remain, South Africa will have 60 days to address them before any action, full or partial, could take effect," Tau said.
"We will continue to engage the U.S. to stabilise trade and investment relations.
"Companies on both sides need a normalised trade environment because of existing value chains in key sectors. So colleagues, we are ready whatever the decision."
Tau added that South Africa was implementing its Cabinet-approved industrial development strategy and diversifying export markets across Africa, India, Saudi Arabia, the European Union, the United Kingdom, ASEAN, Mercosur and China.
He also highlighted progress in trade negotiations with the EU to protect hybrid and electric vehicle exports, an interim arrangement for steel, and new market opportunities for South African citrus, avocados, grapes and apples.
