Record fuel prices in October now unavoidable

JOHANNESBURG - A fuel price shock for motorists next week is now unavoidable.

The latest data suggests that petrol will push higher than R30 per litre for the first time in history and diesel will also reach a record high.

A combination of higher oil prices and a weaker Rand is waging war on the pockets of consumers.

Data from the Central Energy Fund suggests an increase of R3.29 for 95 unleaded petrol and R3.19 for lower sulphur diesel.

95 unleaded petrol rose to a new record above R28 per litre in June this year before stabilising.

It's now set to rise to just above R30 per litre in Gauteng.

Diesel hit a record price above R31 per litre in May, and it's now set to soar to a new record of R33.24.

Brent crude oil has fallen today by around 3% to trade below $100 per barrel but that won't put the brakes on next week's price hike.

Fuel prices change on the first Wednesday of each month.
