Transnet to compete for freight with private sector

JOHANNESBURG - Transnet will appoint eleven private Train Operating Companies to operate on its freight rail network.

The operators will compete with the state owned company’s freight division, whose core mandate is to transport commodities for domestic and export markets.

Transport Minister, Barbara Creecy, insists these reforms are not meant to privatise Transnet.

Transnet’s Freight Rail currently transports 160 million tonnes per year, down from 226 million in the 2017/2018 fiscal year.

By bringing private train owners on board, government is targeting 250 million tonnes of annual freight transportation by 2029.
