Artificial intelligence | A game-changing megatrend that may signal a risky divide - expert

JOHANNESBURG - While business experts Richard Wainwright and Kuseni Dlamini agree that Artificial Intelligence (AI) is set to become a game changer for most sectors, the latter has underlined the risk of a seemingly inevitable economic divide and moral conundrum that may accompany the innovative digital advent.

AI was one of the key talking points at this year's World Economic Forum annual meeting in Davos, Switzerland.

Investec CEO Wainwright says that in terms of digital banking systems, South Africa compares well with its global counterparts.

Meanwhile, Dlamini, speaking to eNCA on Monday, highlighted that despite AI being an opportunity for world governments to deliver efficient and effective ways, there is a risk of a further economic divide.

Dlamini says one of the issues picked up in Davos was that of access and governance.

He says there is a risk concerning haves and have-nots in the global AI debate as well as misinformation and the question of a lack of regulation at this stage of AI's progression.

Dlamini contrasted the rise of social media and the rights and wrongs that came with it as a comparative pattern in the same vein as that of Artificial Intelligence.
