JOHANNESBURG - Motorists are getting a bit more breathing room, for now.
Finance Minister Enoch Godongwana has extended the temporary fuel levy relief to early June.
There is also extra relief on the way for diesel users.
But with the global oil price remaining well above $100 a barrel, how long can government keep dipping into the fuel levy?
Energy expert Matthew Cruise said further increases are coming.
"I would have liked to have seen the increase confirmed for more than just one more month, because the Finance Minister said that from then June it'll be halved.
"So the relief will go from R3 on petrol to then R1.50 and also half on the diesel side as well," Cruise said.
"I prefer to have seen a relief that's for three months because this is heavily affecting the cost of living crisis that's currently being escalated.
"And also the costs of goods in South Africa due to all the transportation costs that increase."
