Chocolate prices rise as cacao farmers contend with extreme weather

JOHANNESBURG - Getting chocolate off the shelves will soon cost more due to rising production costs.

Cacao farmers in West Africa are struggling to cope with the impact of climate change.

The region accounts for an estimated 70 percent of global cacao production.

Vicki Bain, a chocolate sustainability consultant, said the cacao crisis was expected.

"What we're seeing it plays in with the economics," she said.
