Domestic travellers face soaring local airfares

Airfares between Johannesburg and Cape Town have soared, with return tickets up by as much as R2,000 in recent days.

A surge in jet fuel costs is driving the spike.

Although oil prices are easing, airlines buy fuel in advance, so the earlier high costs are only now being passed on to ticket prices.

Local carriers like FlySafair, Airlink and South African Airways have slapped on surcharges, saying they can’t absorb the volatility.

Passengers are now shelling out hundreds of rands more per flight.
