Eskom faces power struggle over wage demands

JOHANNESBURG - Eskom is facing a new power struggle.

Workers are rejecting a 3.5 percent wage hike, calling it an insult.

Unions representing thousands of employees are instead demanding hikes of between 10 and 15 percent.

They say Eskom can’t stabilise the grid while ignoring the people who keep it running.

The standoff raises fears of protracted wage talks when South Africans can least afford instability at Eskom.

The utility says it's open to talks to close the wide gap between the offer and demands.
