JOHANNESBURG - Hopes for a fuel price cut have gone up in smoke.
Rising tensions between the US and Iran have reignited a rise in oil prices, wiping out the fuel over-recoveries that had motorists hoping for a sizeable cut at the pumps.
The petrol price relief has all but disappeared, while diesel users now face hefty increases in August.
Month-end data from the Central Energy Fund shows a flat 95 grade, while 93 only shows a marginal 5 cent per litre decrease.
Diesel, however, is set for increases of between R1.75 and R1.91 per litre.
The reversal follows a surge in oil prices and a weaker rand.
