JOHANNESBURG - Top South African law firms are challenging the new B-BBEE Legal Sector Code of Good Practice.
The code was gazetted in 2024 and sets strict transformation targets.
It requires up to 50 percent black ownership and race-linked procurement and briefing practices.

Trade union Solidarity argues the code has elevated race in decision-making across the profession, while also challenging its constitutionality.
At least four major laws firms have joined the action, warning the code is unlawful and unworkable.
The court is being asked to review and set aside the regulations.
