Rand set for best year since 2009

JOHANNESBURG - 2025 is turning out to be the year of the rand.

The currency is on track for its best year since 2009, surging 13 percent as investors chase yield, and the dollar stumbles.

More than R72-billion has flowed into local bonds, backed by easing inflation, political stability and progress at Eskom and ports.

With a new 3 percent inflation target and expectations of US rate cuts, the rand is ending the year as one of the emerging markets’ top performers.
