Rise in online card fraud triggers ombud alert

JOHANNESBURG - Digital banking is now second nature for most of us, from tapping a phone in-store to shopping online.

But behind the convenience lies growing concerns over fraud.

The National Financial Ombud Scheme reports digital banking fraud complaints surged by 73 percent in just a year.

That’s thousands more people falling victim to scams despite the promised security of virtual cards.

Johan Brouwer from the National Financial Ombud Scheme said banking customers are contacted by fraudsters who have devised several ways of divulging their online banking credentials.
