Talks underway to ease fuel pain

JOHANNESBURG - There is some relief in sight for motorists as government continues discussions on easing fuel price pressures.

The Mineral and Petroleum Resources Department says further fuel price relief is still being considered and discussions are ongoing.

Mid-data from the Central Energy Fund shows underof up to R3 a litre for petrol and over R9 a litre for diesel, increasing the risk of steep hikes in May.

A R9 diesel increase would push wholesale prices above R35 a litre, breaking April’s record.

The Department said high global oil prices, a weaker rand and heavy fuel imports are driving costs, adding that while supply is stable, price remains the main concern.
