CAPE TOWN - The Middle East conflict is sending ships streaming past Cape Town.
Shipping around the Cape of Good Hope has increased sharply following the closure of the Strait of Hormuz. But African ports are capturing only a small share of the diverted trade.
The rerouting has lifted vessel traffic by as much as 90 percent, mainly driven by Asia-Europe and energy shipments.
However, major ports like Durban and Cape Town have not seen a matching rise in port calls.
It's mainly due to congestion, weather disruptions and limited capacity.
Some ports are getting better businesses with ships stopping in Mauritius and Namibia.
