AGOA treaty | Analyst says SA should seek to mend relationship with US

JOHANNESBURG - US senators have introduced a bill to renew the African Growth and Opportunity Act through to 2041.

This means that 30 African countries will keep duty-free exports to the American market.

Most notably, the US has scrapped plans for South Africa to undergo an out-cycle review.

South Africa is one of the United States' biggest beneficiaries, exporting cars, fruit and wine, among other products.

But relations between SA and the superpower soured because of SA's political stance on matters in the Middle East and the war in Ukraine.

Daily Maverick Associate Editor, Brooks Spector, feels that the relationship between the US and SA needs to be improved.
