AMSA forges ahead with Vereeniging revival

JOHANNESBURG - South Africa’s largest steelmaker is eyeing a return to production in Gauteng.

ArcelorMittal says it’s in advanced talks with the Industrial Development Corporation.

It's part of a broader restructuring plan to revitalise its Vereeniging works.

The company plans to restart production at the Vereeniging Bar Mill in the coming quarter.

It will focus on high-value speciality steel bars for the automotive and mining sectors.

The key inputs are in short supply since long-steel operations were scaled back.

While details are limited, the move is seen as an attempt to secure local supply chains and protect jobs.
