Black Friday customers urges to be cautious of scams

JOHANNESBURG - It’s that time of year when shoppers flock to malls and online stores in search of the best Black Friday deals.

But while bargain hunters prepare, scammers are just as ready.

A new JustMoney survey reveals that many continue to fall victim to Black Friday scams.

Sarah Nicholson, Operations Manager at JustMoney, shares tips on how to avoid becoming a statistic.

  • Trust your gut. If something is too good to be true, it likely is.
  • Set up strong and unique passwords, and where possible, multifactor authentication.
  • Don't feel pressured to rush into a purchase.
  • Where possible, use a shopping app rather than a website.
  • If you can, rather use a credit card than a debit card.
  • Keep track of bank notifications.
  • If you think you've been scammed, freeze your card immediately and report to your bank.
  • Don't share an OTP with anyone.
