JOHANNESBURG - The Competition Commission has launched a formal market inquiry into South Africa’s biggest poultry producers.
Astral, RCL, Country Bird, and Sovereign – which together produce nearly two-thirds of the country’s chicken – will have to defend their business practices.
The Commission says the industry is seemingly dominated by a few large, vertically integrated players, potentially locking out smaller competitors.
The probe will examine pricing, access to key inputs, and possible barriers to fair competition across the value chain.
