Copper strength boost Anglo performance

JOHANNESBURG - Shares at Anglo American are higher today despite the mining giant reporting a loss for the six months that ended in June.

The loss of $858 million was less than half the loss for the same period last year.  

Anglo said the core earnings reflect solid production and cost performance.

The company has been restructuring its operations to focus on copper and crop nutrients.

It's also focusing on quality iron ore, leaving Kumba Iron Ore as a strategic subsidiary.

On the other hand, it is selling its coal and nickel businesses, and it plans to sell the diamond company with a long history in South Africa, De Beers.

The miner is also merging with Teck Resources in Canada to create what it calls a global metal and minerals champion.

The deal is waiting only for regulatory approval from China.
