Cost-of-living crisis | South Africans drop the bottle, pick up pens

JOHANNESBURG - Discovery Bank clients went on a spending spree this festive season, spending 15 percent more.

The bank's Festive SpendTrend shows consumers spent 7 percent more compared to the same period in 2023.

Some of the top categories include outdoor activities, movies, toys, eating out and takeaways, and clothes.

Interestingly, it shows people were mindful about 'back-to-school' as more was spent on stationery than alcohol.

During the festive travel period, Discovery Bank clients also flew more.
