Distell, Heineken tie-up approved

JOHANNESBURG - Heineken's R40bn tie-up with JSE-listed liquor group Distell - the maker of Savanna – has got the final green light nearly a year and a half after the deal was officially announced.

Heineken says the approval gives the go-ahead for an "ambitious package" of public interest commitments.

These include broad-based black economic empowerment, job creation, localisation and supplier development.

The Competition Commission is due to announce the agreed-upon conditions soon.

The deal faced resistance from some parties when it was first announced including from  AB-Inbev’s South Africa Breweries unit.

There were concerns that Heineken’s takeover of Distell would remove an effective competitor in the market for cider.
