This way outstrips inflation of less than 30% in the same period.

Direct Eskom customers were already subject to a 12.5% price increase this year with municipalities often pegging their increases on Eskom prices.

After a deal to recoup some older costs, electricity is set to rise by 8.8% for direct Eskom customers next year and the same amount the following year.

In March the Minister of Electricity Kgosientsho Ramogkopa assured residents that the days of double digit increases are gone.
