FlySafair assures no flight cancelations amid pilot protest

JOHANNESBURG - The country's aviation sector is facing significant disruptions.

Over 200 FlySafair pilots have gone on strike demanding a 10,5 percent pay raise.

The airline, however, is offering a 5,7 percent increase. It says the pilots' demands are too steep.

At least 26 domestic flights have already been cancelled this morning.

FlySafair spokesperson Kirby Gordon says efforts are being made to ensure that no more than 26 flights are cancelled.

"We know what we have got for the day, which is 26 out of 174 flights [which have been cancelled], which equates to about 12% to 13% existing flights. For the rest of the week going forward, we have a reduced schedule which was arranged last week already."

For Tuesday, Gordan assures that there will be no last-minute cancellations, as flights have been prearranged already

Meanwhile, airport security is under scrutiny after a man slipped through security at OR Tambo International Airport with two hand grenades.

The infraction was only detected in Ethiopia.

Aviation expert Phuthego Mojapele says the security failures in the country's airports are worrisome and not new.

"Whatever happened there is true evidence of what I have been complaining about. There is a serious issue that needs to be taken up with security at ACSA," he said.
