Fresh produce market inquiry to focus on fruit, vegetables

The Competition Commission will start an inquiry into the fresh produce market to determine whether there are activities in the value chain that impede competition.

JOHANNESBURG - There's a sigh of relief for many as the Competition Commission embarks on its inquiry into the fruit and vegetable market.    

The focus will be on five fruits and six vegetables, which include bananas, apples, pears, spinach, onions and cabbage.

The commission says it feels the costs and volatility of certain foodstuffs are not fully understood.

The probe has raised concerns about the burden it places on farmers, fruit markets and retailers.  

The African Council of Hawkers and Informal Businesses has welcomed the inquiry into fresh produce.
