G20 Clean-Up | City clean-up under scrutiny as G20 comes to Jozi

JOHANNESBURG - Joburg streets are getting a much-needed and long-awaited facelift.

Potholes are being filled, trash cleared, and major routes repaired.

But the big question is whether this is for residents or for the G20 leaders arriving later this month?

For years Joburg residents have faced poor and inconsistent service delivery, and now the city is finally taking action.

The President says the clean-up isn’t just for appearance it’s a chance to set a standard for the future.

But critics believe this effort is driven by visitors rather than the daily needs of Joburg residents.

Neeshan Bolton, of Joburg Crisis Alliance, spoke to eNCA reporter, Nabeelah Sheikh about the clean-up.

"These rapid improvements should be welcome, but what it does indicate is that these long standing issues, could've been fixed."

Bolton believes that these repair works need to be sustainable into the future, and not just for the upcoming G20 Leader's Summit on 22 - 23 November 2025.
