JOHANNESBURG - The Gauteng government has committed to paying R5.4 billion towards e-toll debt on Monday.
R2 billion of that will go into the Gauteng Freeway Improvement Project.
This will be the second of five annual instalments to be paid to the National Treasury.
The e-tolling system was officially scrapped last year.
After the scrapping of the e-tolls, it was revealed that the province owed over R20 billion for the system.
The government promised to make annual payments to settle the bill.
Gauteng's MEC for Finance, Lebogang Maile says the province is paying on behalf of road users who were billed by the system.
He emphasised that this money could have been used for other social services that are needed by people.
