Inflation and retail data to show impact of fuel price hikes

JOHANNESBURG - Important data this week will provide further insights into the extent to which higher fuel prices are affecting inflation and spending.

On Wednesday, Consumer Price Inflation for July will be released.

In June, prices increased by 5 percent compared to the same month a year earlier.

And that was the highest inflation South Africa had seen in two years.

The transport sector contributed significantly, and economists have also been looking for signs of second-round inflation, whereby a host of goods and services across the economy are impacted.

Following June's number, the market was surprised that the Reserve Bank did not hike interest rates to control inflation.

Retail sales for June will also be released this week.

In May, retail sales rose 2.3 percent year-on-year after falling the previous month.

Recent results show that Shoprite continues to thrive despite pressure on consumers, but some other retailers are feeling the strain.
