Informal traders fear for livelihoods as Tobacco Products Bill clears

JOHANNESBURG - The National Informal Traders Alliance of South Africa said it was not consulted on the Tobacco Products and Electronic Delivery Systems Control Bill.

"They can't do the Bill without us," said Chairperson Kefilwe Kitso.

Kitso said the people who will be most affected will be those selling loose cigarettes.

"Many of their livelihoods depend on those single sticks," she said.

Parliament cleared the Bill on Wednesday, despite some Members of Parliament having reservations.

However, the Bill gets to move to the next stage before it can be promulgated into law.

MPs said the Bill still needs significant changes. They are calling for different regulations for cigarettes and vaping products.
