'Love is blind but debt isn't': Expert on financial matters ahead of Valentine's Day

JOHANNESBURG - Love is in the air as Valentine's Day nears.

But many will be splashing cash on romance despite tight wallets.

National Debt Advisors Counsellor, Samantha Moyana, warns that those flashy gestures often hide money troubles that surface later, turning hearts and flowers into hearts and heartache.

She attributes this to what she calls financial infidelity, which means the lack of transparency when it comes to finances and relating to a partner.

Such results in many people splitting, Moyana said.

“Money is a very sensitive topic and that once you don't have that foundation when it comes to discussing your finances with your partner, that relationship would definitely be on thin ice, "she said.

Moyana does not blame separations entirely on Valentine’s Day; it is a buildup of anger and lack of transparency and openness in terms of finances.

This then results in one rethinking and reflecting on their relationship.

Moyana advises one to always be considerate of their bank balance and buy what they can afford.
